Two European LIFE projects presented to promote climate resilience and sustainable forest management

The Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta and the Consorci de la Ribera have submitted two proposals to the European LIFE 2025 programme focused on combating climate change and the green transition. On the one hand, there is a climate resilience project in the Verd and Magre river basins; on the other, an innovative model for forest fire management and prevention in the Serra de Corbera. Both initiatives are in line with the European Union’s climate objectives.

The first project, LIFE Aigua, will be coordinated by the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta and includes pilot actions in the Verd and Magre river basins, with renaturalisation and flood adaptation measures. Among the planned actions are the promotion of organic farming, the implementation of sustainable urban drainage systems and the creation of wetlands.

LIFE Aigua aims to restore the environment and enhance the Verd river as a natural, social and recreational space, a river that runs through the municipalities of Alzira, Benimodo, Massalavés and Alberic. The project includes actions on the Magre river, in the municipalities of Catadau, Llombai and Alfarb, and also in several municipalities in the Carraixet ravine, in l’Horta Nord. Its total budget exceeds €2.28 million, with a duration of five years and 60% funding.

The second project focuses on a new model for managing and preventing forest fires in the Serra de Corbera, based on inter-municipal cooperation. The proposal has been presented by the Consorci de la Ribera —made up of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta and the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Baixa— with the participation of the town councils of Alzira, Benifairó de la Valldigna, Corbera, Favara, Llaurí and Tavernes de la Valldigna.

The plan envisages the creation of a shared forest brigade and the strengthening of environmental volunteering, with actions covering more than 5,000 hectares of forest area. The Serra de Corbera is a strategic area both for its CO₂ drainage function and its climate resilience capacity. The estimated budget is €1.2 million, also with 60% European funding.
