The Agency for Equality and Coexistence of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta has organised the ‘Gender and Health’ conference, linked to the International Day of Action for Women’s Health and marking the 30th anniversary of the regional body. The event, held in Alginet and attended by around 100 people, examined gender differences in health and violence against women in the healthcare sector through presentations by three specialists.
The conference was opened by Elia Ferrer, Mayor of Alginet, and closed by Toni Barea, President of the Consorci de la Ribera, comprising the Ribera Alta and Ribera Baixa regional associations. Throughout the morning, participants reflected on how gender biases within the healthcare system influence the care, diagnosis and health outcomes for women.
From an informative and accessible perspective, issues such as the lack of consideration for female anatomy in medical research, inequalities in healthcare, and women’s experiences in areas such as pregnancy and childbirth were addressed. The situation and care for women who are victims of gender-based violence in the primary care setting were also discussed.
The conference featured three professionals with extensive experience in the fields of health and gender, who offered different perspectives and insights on this topic. They were Ana M. González Ramos, senior researcher at the CSIC and director of the Institute for Advanced Social Studies; Rosa González, a specialist in family and community medicine at the Salvador Pau health centre in Valencia; and Susi Obiol, a midwife at the Doctor Peset Hospital in Valencia and secretary of the Federation of Midwives’ Associations of the Valencian Community.
