The institution is strengthening its international relations to mark its 30th anniversary with a framework memorandum of understanding with the African country. The memorandum aims to strengthen local governance through an agreement between supramunicipal entities and to promote sustainable development
The president of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta, Paqui Momparler, and the president of the National Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde (ANMCV), Fábio Vieira, formalized the signing and partnership between the two entities at a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta in Alzira on May 13.
The Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta and local Cape Verdean institutions have collaborated on various European projects: Praia (the country’s capital), with which the Mancomunitat partnered on the HORESD cooperation program with Ghana, and the municipality of Mosteiros, on the island of Fogo, was one of the partners in the REDHES project led by the Consorci de la Ribera—comprising the associations of municipalities of Ribera Alta and Ribera Baixa—which carried out activities in the city of Agua Grande in São Tomé and Príncipe.
Since then, the relationship between the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta and Cape Verde has been ongoing, and the memorandum of understanding aims to strengthen this relationship and foster collaborative synergies in public administration, planning, and services. It covers general issues in key sectors such as waste management, mobility, safety, and public lighting, as well as social and cultural areas.
Among its objectives are the promotion of sustainable development, citizen participation, cultural exchanges, joint training, and the implementation of projects in fields such as education, health, and the environment.
The initiative is an important step in supramunicipal cooperation to address local challenges and strengthen ties by leveraging the experience of previous projects and the relationship with their leaders.
This collaboration protocol should enable our region, its associations, and its citizens to exchange experiences to address problems and help one another in the search for solutions. Some common themes include transportation, the environment, health, the protection of cultural heritage, the fight against exclusion, racism, and xenophobia, equal opportunities, employment initiatives, etc.
This collaboration agreement will include objectives such as transparency, sustainable development, citizen participation in decision-making, social and cultural exchanges between the two regions, the coordination of mutual learning initiatives, and the development and implementation of educational, development, and environmental projects.
