MANCOMUNITAT DE LA RIBERA ALTA
The Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta is a local authority that brings together all the municipalities in the Ribera Alta region. It comprises 35 municipalities with a total population of over 220,000 inhabitants, spread over an area of 979.5 km².
The Mancomunitat manages various services of interest to the municipalities that comprise it, constituting a regional forum where issues affecting the towns in the region can be discussed. The Mancomunitat is responsible for:
- Promoting services that seek to effectively improve the well-being of the entire population.
- Promoting actions before public and private institutions and entities aimed at improving services.
- Participating, organising and collaborating in regional events and those aimed at promoting our region.
- Cooperating, participating and promoting the dissemination of study material about our region written in our language.
It is the regional body best suited to promoting initiatives and participating in certain European programmes aimed primarily at the Ribera region.
In order to carry out its activities, the Mancomunitat receives contributions from the municipalities that form it and subsidies from various public bodies.
The Plenary Session of the Mancomunitat is the supreme governing and administrative body of the Mancomunitat and is made up of representatives from the member municipalities (all the mayors and a certain number of councillors from each local council).
The Presidency, Vice-Presidencies, Governing Board and various information committees complete the governing bodies of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta.

Twinnings
The Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta has been twinned with the Canton of Upala (Costa Rica) since 15 November 2008. This twinning agreement was renewed on 25 March 2014.
On 20 July 2017, the twinning between the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta, the Canton of Upala and the Río Lempa Tri-national Border Community (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador) was formalised.
The aim is to facilitate exchanges and cooperation between both territories in order to achieve sustainable growth.
