The Consorci de la Ribera, formed by the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta and the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Baixa, together with the municipalities of Alzira, Benifairó de la Valldigna, Corbera, Llaurí, and Tavernes de la Valldigna, have held a new institutional meeting to promote the inter-municipal cooperation project for the management and prevention of forest fires in the Serra de Corbera, with a budget of around 1.2 million euros.
The town councils and the Consorci de la Ribera, which are presenting this initiative, are applying for European funds to support the effective and sustainable management of the Serra de Corbera area through the LIFE 2025 programme. The proposed measures are in line with the European Union’s climate and green transition objectives, such as the Green Deal and the Biodiversity Strategy to 2030.
This plan has continued to take shape over recent weeks since the first institutional meeting held in July. The aim of the Consorci de la Ribera and the municipalities is to transform the management of this area of great ecological value, classified as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in the Natura 2000 Network, through coordinated, sustainable, and inclusive action.
The Serra de Corbera has more than 5,000 hectares of forest area and is a key area for CO₂ drainage and climate resilience. It is an area that needs a coordinated strategy to address rural abandonment, preventive infrastructure that needs to be updated, and administrative fragmentation.
Among the measures proposed are the creation of an alliance between the institutions involved in fire prevention, forest restoration, and the socioeconomic promotion of the territory.
The project presents a model of shared governance to protect and adapt a highly valuable area such as the Serra de Corbera to new ecological challenges. In addition to reducing the risk of fires, it is hoped to improve operational response, restore the traditional agroforestry mosaic, and revive the rural economy.
