Today, Friday 26 April 2024, institutional representatives visited the construction site for an animal shelter that will serve various municipalities in Ribera Alta, Ribera Baixa and La Safor.
In view of growing social awareness regarding animal welfare, where transparency in the development of the activity is becoming increasingly important, beyond the cost and efficiency of the service, the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta, together with the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Baixa and the Mancomunitat de Municipis de la Safor, has begun a process to assess and study other alternatives to respond to social demand.
In agreement with the respective municipalities, these associations have deemed it appropriate for the Consorci de la Ribera to take on the provision of this service through a management formula involving the same entity in collaboration with animal protection organisations.
As a result of the efforts made by the Consorci de la Ribera to launch the service, a 3,035 m² municipal plot of land in the municipality of Tavernes de la Valldigna has been made available, as well as a 4,058 m² municipal plot of land in the municipality of l’Alcúdia. Both plots meet all the necessary basic requirements.
During the visit, the director of the works, Javier Gironés, explained the content of the project to those present, including Josep Mur Díaz-Hellín, president of the Consorci de la Ribera, Paqui Momparler Orta, president of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta, Óscar Navarro Torres, vice-president of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Baixa, Voro Femenia Peiró, president of the Mancomunitat de Municipis de la Safor, and Lara Romero Giner, mayor of Tavernes de la Valldigna, among others.
A model of direct management by the Administration is proposed, whereby the facilities and the provision of the service are managed by the public entity itself and the facilities will consist of a space for dogs, a space for cats and a space for other animals. In addition, there will be a care area and a reception and administration module.
Work began in March 2024 and the opening is scheduled for mid-2025, with a total investment of €1,297,000 (each animal centre), with an optimal capacity of 400 animals, although legally this figure could be greatly exceeded.
The shelter is located in the El Golfo industrial estate in Tavernes de la Valldigna, between Paseo de Comunidad de Regantes and Calle del Golfo.
This centre will be a benchmark as a zoological hub.
