The president of the Consorci de la Ribera, Toni Barea; the president of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta, Paqui Momparler Orta; and a delegation from the Ajuntament de l’Alcúdia led by the deputy mayor, Àngels Boix Combres, visited the new Animal Shelter in l’Alcúdia. With a budget of around €1.3 million, the facility is in the final stages of preparation and will open its doors shortly.
The Animal Shelter is an initiative of the Consorci de la Ribera and the associations of municipalities of Ribera Alta, Ribera Baixa and Safor, serving municipalities in the three regions. The facilities in l’Alcúdia will join another similar centre located in the town of Tavernes de la Valldigna, which has been in operation since its inauguration in October.
The aim of this project is to help meet all the health and humanitarian needs of abandoned or lost animals in the towns it covers, as well as to educate and raise awareness in society about care, respect and responsible ownership. The animals are rescued by the centre’s staff when they receive notification of their presence on public roads and are transferred to the facilities, where they receive the care they need. The aim is for their stay to be temporary and to encourage their adoption.
The centre will have capacity for over a hundred dogs and more than a hundred cats. The animals have modules adapted to their needs and shared courtyards. There is also space for other animals, a veterinary consultation room and areas dedicated to training, meetings and visits. The plot on which it has been built covers an area of 4,053.22 m².
Toni Barea describes the initiative as a success. “It is a public project for animal welfare, where abandoned animals, dogs and cats, will be able to live in optimal conditions”, says the president of the Consorci de la Ribera.
Paqui Momparler Orta explained that the centres in Tavernes de la Valldigna and l’Alcúdia are based on three ideas. “The Animal Welfare Law, moving towards a more ethical and responsible model; efficiency and cooperation between municipalities, because we share resources, guaranteeing a better service; and the social, educational and public health impact it has, because we promote adoption and responsible ownership”, said the president of the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta.
